Just replaced a Canon with a HP scanner. The HP seems to have more problems
with moiré on some materials.

There's a "Descreen" filter in the driver that has limited effect on the
final output.

What do you-all do to prevent and treat moiré?

Dan,

some time ago I used a program called Picture Publisher by
Micrografx. This program had an excellent moiré filter which
used clever mathematics to obtain a precise model of the moiré
pattern and deducted it perfectly without losing any visible
sharpness.

Unfortunately I haven't seen anything like it ever since, and I
had to drop Picture Publisher because of its excessive number of
defects.

The moiré filter in Paint Shop Pro is a joke in comparison. It
is only a soft filter that essentially doesn't remove the moiré
at all, it just reduces it along with any other high frequencies
by applying a low pass filter, making the whole picture soft.

While we're at it, does anybody know a third-party tool that
does what Picture Publisher did?

I have a version of PP (Think 6.0).
It was not the upgraded version and came for free with my Mustek (now
dead) scanner.
I don't recall this version of PP having the moire, however guess I
could be mistaken and just missed the option.
In any event, I have the CD.

Don,

I don't know whether you feel like installing that heavyweight
program just to try the moiré removal filter, but if you do, let
us all know how it goes. I thought it was very impressive.

Hello Hans,
I paid $200 US for that Mustek scanner in 1996.
For the past two years I have been using a Canon bottom-line scanner that
offers prescan-moire in the software.
The technology change (improvement) in this newer scanner is positively
day and night.

I have gone back and viewed some archived TIF's from the old Mustek and
the quality existed in the archived file, however the Picture Publisher
software just didn't display it properly.

I'm using Windows XP today and I'm not sure if a driver update exists for
the PP software.
I may install the thing at a later date and see how it goes.
