modifying open with panel properties

dear listers,

thanks for your help and advice. when we double clicked on
an unknown file to open it, the 'open with' panel would
pop-up asking 'choose the program you want to use to open
this file'. at the bottom of the panel there is a tick box
that says 'Always use the selected program to open this
kind of file'. In my panel, the tick box is always ticked.
How can i modify (maybe via registry, but which and where)
the behaviour so that the tick box is always untick to
begin with.

I,ve found that the tickbox is ticked sometimes but not others, I don't know
why.
It seems that you have got to keep your eyes open to it and untick it until
you know it's the right program.
