Modifying normal.dot when Word is the Outlook Email Editor

WinXP Home, Office 2003. Word is the editor in Outlook. When I type a
message, a carriage return automatically gives me a space between lines
equivalent to two lines. I would like to kill this feature so that one
carriage return gives me one line. I can modify the format in each message
to do that, but I cannot save the line spacing into normal.dot or similar
template. Thanks in advance for your help.
