Here the thing, this is probably the 3rd time i'v had to reinstall windows because there are viruses that just wont go away, even using Norton 2004 etc.
In order to preven this i made all the other users on the computer to Limited Accounts and only myself as an admin. but there is a problem, now those accounts can't even use ICQ or other programs.
How can I, sort of speak, go to advanced options in 'User Accounts' and allow all, or specific users access to certain programs?

Thanks for the help, this is rather urgent....

Greetings:

Either change users to the Power Users group or configure permissions
for users in C:\Properties\Security\go into advanced options\permissions\
select limited users group\click Modify\check specific permissions..

You can set permissions only on drives that are formatted to use NTFS
If the check boxes in the Permissions box are not available for subfolders,
the permissions are inherited from the parent folder.
To change permissions, you must be the owner or have permission to change
permissions by the owner. Groups or users who have Full Control permissions
for a folder can delete the files and the subfolders in that folder,
regardless of the
permissions that protect the files and the subfolders.

1.. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
3.. Click the View tab, and then click to clear the Use simple file
sharing [Recommended] check box in the Advanced settings box.
Full description of specific permissions and procedure.

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks, but there is still a problem.
my drive is NTFS but there is no security tab in any of the folders' properties, non at all... which makes it very bizzar
also, i have only two options in the account types: Limited, and Administrator.
i dont know to which you are refering as power users...
if it will be more convinient for you, email me: (e-mail address removed)

thanks again, i hope this problem can be overcome

Hi:

Viruses are known to make changes in security settings. a missing security
tab is one of those simptoms.. are you sure there is no virus presently in
your system?.

To make the security tab present:

a) Login as the administrator in safe mode and see if it's present now.

b) No Security tab being present is usually due to some configured directive
in the Group Editor

(GPO snap in) .. To check directives go to Start\Run\type; gpedit.msc\User
Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows
Explorer\in the right pane search for directive; "Remove the Security Tab".
change this directive to Not Configured..

While in the GPO snap in look for other enabled directives which could be
causing you trouble.

To do this, Expand all folders and look in the right pane for directives
that are established as "Enabled"

If you are the only local administrator in your computer and you have not
enabled any GPO directives, all which could be enabled were probably changed
by a virus or hacker..

To Change Users to Power, Standard or Advanced (different denomination same
group)

Look in Start\Run\type; control userpasswords2 and hit enter\select user and
click on

Properties\click tab; Pertaining to Groups\select Standard Users or select
Others\select Advanced Users from

the scroll window.

If you have forgoten the administrator password change it in control
userpasswords2 selecting the administrator account and click the Restore
Password button.

Hope this solves that issue..

Hi Talyn:

I missed the part where you mentioned your OS is a Home Edition...
In that version of Windows XP the Security tab is not present in
normal login and the GPO settings are not available in that Version..
so ignore everything I said before.

The Security tab can only be accessed in Safe Mode in the
Home Edition ... Log in with the administrator-owner account in safe mode..
if you have forgotten the password change it in Start\Run\type;
control userpasswords2 hit enter\select the admin account and click
on Restore (or Reestablish) Password..

i did all those things and not only set full controll to the all users group to the specific folder where the program is but to the entire program files folder, i also added each user individualy and set full control, i even took ownership of the program files folder under my user name.. and still.

the options are on, but it still doesnt allow to tun ICQ (specificaly), it keeps popping up the message that you do not have permission to run the program, please ask the admin for write access.

i'm at a lost...is there anything to do about this?
