Modifcation Date

whenever I open/access a word file, the "modified" date
changes to the date I just accessed with, even when I do
not make any changes to the file...

If you don't have any fields in your document that update on opening, this
may be related to SmartTabs. Uncheck Tools>Options>Save>Embed SmartTabs and
see if it resolves the issue.
