Can anyone help me with a modem problem. My Dell modem will not
connect..It causes my phone to not work. When I try to connect there is
no dial tone. The modem shows up on devices.I had this problem before
and Dell told me to move the card to an ajoining plug in .I tried this
again but it did not work. Any suggestions? Gary

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off-hook

"On an ordinary two-wire telephone line, off-hook status is communicated
to the telephone exchange by a resistance short across the pair."

So to get dial tone, the modem has to "load" the line. A bad connector
contact, a bad telephone cable, might prevent it.

And I suppose you've already checked that the phone, and the
phone line itself works, by using them without the modem in place.

Also note that when the computer tries to take the line off hook it may
be disconnecting the jack that is intended for the telephone. IF you get
the jacks mixed up, with the line connected to the phone jack and the
phone connected to the line jack, the computer will disconnect itself.
