I am trying to install a modem into a windows 2000
machine. I have tried several working modems from other
win 2000 machines but every time I try on this machine I
get the following error message;

An error occured during the installation of the device.
The required section was not found in the INF.

It doesn't matter if I try with drivers downloaded from
manufacturers websites or if I use the Windows 2000
provided drivers.

Any help would be much appreciated.

John,

This really does not have anything to do with WIN2000 Active Directory. I
might suggest that you post this in a more appropriate NG, like the General
NG or maybe the Hardware NG. Your chances of receiving help are greater in
there.

However, since I am here: You are trying to install a modem into your
WIN2000 Professional machine. It is not working and you are given the error
mentioned below. Clearly the modems that you are taking out of the in-use
2000 systems are not new. But they are working. It is a good thing to do:
take a known-good xxx and try it when your xxx is not working. Are you
using the same drivers for the new installation of the modem that were used
in your working installations?

Have you tried different PCI slots? Maybe there is something going on with
that PCI slot? Have you taken the modem that you are currently trying to
install in the WIN2000 Machine and put it in one of the machines where there
is already a modem working?

Look on the chipset of the modem and write down the numbers ( something like
Rockwell 'Mexico 45923' at the top and 'Hong Kong 54365' at the bottom )
and go to drivers.com and do a search for the correct drivers. It sounds
like you have the driver disk and it sounds like WIN2000 wants to recognize
it.

I would try this and then post to the above mentioned NGs with the results.
