I bought a Compaq Presario with XP a couple of months ago. It will not stay connected to my ISP. I have done everything my ISP and Compaq tech support has told me to do. Nothing works. My ISP thinks I may have a bad modem. Sometimes I will stay connected for hours at a time. And other times, I will be disconnected several times in a hour. If I click on the icon to reconnect, it says that I am still connected. But I'm not. I have to click disconnect, and start all over. Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem. Actually it sounds exactly the same. I assume you have a broadband connection? My problem was being caused by a faulty ethernet card. I don't want to tell you to go out and get a new card until you've exhausted all other possiblities. It helped for me though.

Hi Chris
I have dial-up......... I just know that I am so fed up with this. You would think that the tech support for Compaq or my ISP would be able to help. They just keep having me do the exact same thing over and over again

I know what you mean. Having an ongoing problem can be very frustrating. Also, tech support for some companies and ISp's can be a horror to deal with. I really don't know what else to suggest. Do you have any static on your phone line? Pick up the reciever and dial just one digit so the dial tone goes away and listen for any noise on the line. That could do it too.

Hi Chris
No static here, I have already had the phone company out to check the line. HP just sent me a URL to down load a modem driver SoftPaq. So will do that and see if that works.

If that doesn't work, tell Compaq to fix it or you'll return it and expect a
full refund. If it's only a couple months old, it's still under full
warranty, and the customer is always right.
