I upgraded to windows XP a short time ago, I have noticed that when I turn my
computer on and just before windows open's the computer makes a noise through
the speakers and when I shut down It pops just as the screen goes black. My
volume has to be turned all most off or it's way to loud.

If the beep occurs before Windows starts to load, it may be a "beep code"
coming from BIOS warning about a configuration problem. Beep codes vary
from one system board to the next so you will need to look this up for your
hardware.

Or it may just be the typical "beep" that occurs when the check for a
floppy drive has completed.

There may be a menu in BIOS setup that could help with this. On my system
board I have the option in BIOS setup of directing the beeps through the PC
speakers. I do not use this option as it is louder than when the beep emits
directly from the tower. I also have an option to turn on/off the beep for
floppy detect and another option to completely skip the floppy drive
detection.

You would need to check out what's available to you on your system. You may
have similar options but since this area can greatly vary, you may find no
options to help with alleviating the beep sound level.

Do you ever make it into Windows at all? If yes, does everything work okay
there? Volume levels return to normal? No extraneous sounds?

There are a few sound cards that are noticeably louder on the initial
startup sound and normal for all other sounds. Several of Creative's
Soundblasters fall into this category. While updated drivers will minimize
the behavior, it never goes entirely away.

Also, the popping could possibly be the positioning of the sound card. If
it is right next to an AGP display adapter and you're comfortable working
inside the case, try moving the sound card over to another slot.

Why do you have Modem in the subject line? Do you suspect this to be part
of the problem or...?
 
Thanks for your responce. I think it is my modem because I never had this
problem before I upgraded to windows XP and someone told me it was my modem.
It is not a beep that I hear when starting up, it is hard to explane, but it
is a pop when I shut down. Everything works find.I just have to keep my
volume turned way down when starting and shuting down. Also I used have
volume bars showing me how much I am moving my sound up or down.

Since you just installed SP2, check that your sound drivers didn't get
changed at the same time. Reinstall your sound drivers or check
manufacturer's site for new ones.

You said "shutdown" in your original post and I missed that. So sorry.

Most modems have a separate volume control in Control Panel> Phone and
Modem Options. Have you tried that volume slider yet?
