I am running w2k pro sp4 with all the updates installed. I have been using
a broadband ISP for a while. Today, I needed to connect to my old ISP, via
modem, and discovered that I could not: the system can not find the modem
(even though the right inf file is there, and the connectoid info is as I
remembered). I have no idea which update may be responsible. Can some kind
soul suggest what I should do?

Thank you in advance.

If it's an external modem: Make sure it is plugged in and
turned on.
For internal and external modems: Try going through a
"Add New Hardware" process via the Control Panel.

First uninstall any drivers if present under Device
Manager\Modem\Drivers. Make a list of the drivers for your modem if
necessay. If the inf file and other related files are still present in
Explorer then delete them. Then shutdown PC. If you have an internal
modem card, remove it, or external modem then unplug it. Boot up the PC.
If you still have the drivers for either on CDRom,(most modems come with
CDRom drivers, check first) and they are specified for Win2k then
re-install them. Shutdown your PC again and insert modem card or
reconnect external modem then boot up. Win2k should then detect your
modem and you should let it find the drivers on your HDD.

If it's an external modem, in addition (and perhaps before proceeding
with) the other suggestions, you could check in the bios to make sure
that the appropriate serial port has not been disabled.
