I'm guessing here.
You don't explain what setup you're using. Is this a dialup connection or
DSL modem on a shared phone line?
If it's a DSL modem, try installing a line filter
Turn off "wake on ring" in the pc bios
Try turning off any special phone exchange features like call forwarding.
maybe a 'call waiting' signal is breaking your connection
sometimes you can set a prefix in dialup properties to disable the feature
before you use the internet
