Hi all..putting together a system for a family member. having broadband I
have not paid attention to modems or dial up. I am looking at modems to
purchase (hardware modem). I noticed the technology is now 56K V.92. Is
this new? I imagine this is what I want.

TIA..

Ralph..I understand that. I was wondering where the .92 came from . A few
years ago it was all .90.

thanks..

That is what you need now. There are basically 2 kinds of modems. One is a
hardware modem which is a complete modem and can be either an internal or
external modem. The other one is more of an interface that uses some of the
computers processing power to do the decoding. Unless you want to play
games over the internet either one will be ok if you are running a version
of windows. The "win modem" will not run under another operating system.
They range from free after a rebate to about 20 or 30 dollars.

Besure to disable a com port in the cmos if you are going to use an internal
modem if needed.
