We are all at the mercy of our telephone service when it
comes to dial-up connection performance. The best I have
been able to squeeze out of my 56Kbps modem is 48Kpbs.
With that said, there is one basic thing you should do
you you have not already done so. Click on Start. Click
on Control Panel. Double click the Phone and Modem
Options icon. (If you don't see this icon, you are
probably in category view. If so, near the top left
corner of the screen, click Switch to Classic View. You
should now see the icon.) In the Phone and Modem Options
window, click the Modems tab. Click once on the modem
that is identified as being installed, to highlight it,
and then click on Properties. Click on the Modem tab in
the Properties window and then change the Maximum Port
Speed to 115200. Click OK to finish. If the Maximum
Port Speed is already at 115200, then your telephone
service is to blame for the poor performance. In which
case, you should try using a different dial-up number.
These POP numbers can vary greatly in the performance you
will receive. I hope this helps.
