Modem speaker still ON inspite of connection established

Hello,

I am working on Windows XP professional and my modem is
internal soft56 PCI generic modem, When I connect to the
net using a dial up connection it connects properly fast
no problems but the dial up noise of the modem is still
ON which is very uncomfortable.I have tried in the device
manager to mute the modem volume but it was useless..
Plz help.

Control Panel|PHONE & MODEMS|MODEMStab|PROPERTIES|ADVANCED tab

Type M0 (zero) into the Extra Settings box, and see what happens.
