modem roblems after installing new anti-virus

I am using WinXP Home edition on a E-machines 2.0GHz with 1G memory
installed. I recently installed a new anti-virus (Avast) to replace my
Norton anti-virus. I inadvertently forgot to disable my Norton Utilities
prior to the install of Avast. This created a multitude of problems, I was
informed by my ISP that I had to boot Windows in Safe Mode and completely
remove the Norton Utilities from my system. I did as instructed and then
rebooted. Now I am having a problem connecting to the internet. I have a
icon shortcut on my desktop to check my mail. When I double-click it, my
modem dials out and I can review my E-mail.

However, when I double-click my Internet Explorer shortcut, I receive an
error that states "Microsoft Windows does not have any modems listed for
this computer" and will not dial-up to the internet. I have used the Modem
Troubleshooter and the system tells me that my modem is connected to COM 3
and is functioning properly. I have also checked under Network Connections,
but there are no modems listed in the connections area. When I attempt to
add a "new connection" the options for setting up a new connection is
limited to Broadband. That is, the other radio buttons are grayed out and I
can not change them.

I apologize for rambling on, but I thought the more info I provided would
help someone resolve my problem. About the only thing I haven't done is to
use the System Restore function to restore before my install of Avast.
Would this help? Can anyone please provide more information or suggestions?

Thanks for any help you might provide,
James
