I have just upgraded to XP am now suffering problems with
my USB modem. I have installed the updated XP drivers
from the maufacturers website but it has not cured the
fault. I only have the operating system installed on my
machine at the moment, this info may be of use. When I
install the modem it configures ok and works great. when
i turn of my machine and then restart it ( the time
difference between these vents can be anything from a few
minutes to days) I try to connect to the internet but the
system says that it cannot do anything because of error
633, someting is using the port my modem is connected to
and it cant be opened. to make it work again i have to
unplug the modem restart the machine and then plug it
back in again, windows does not ask for any drivers it
just configures it ok and i can use the modem again. thsi
is becomeing slightly infuriating can anyone offer a
reaon that tis may be happening? the modem is an Allied
data Tornado 563 USB modem.. thanks in advance..regards

Sounds like a resource conflict. Modems like to grab one
of 2 IRQ's by default on the bus but as the USB gets
loaded last it might be having a problem grabbing an
appropriate IRQ during system startup. Q: Do you have
com2 disabled in the bios? If not I would try that to
ensure that there is a resource avail.

Hi Bruce

thanks for that, I tried it but alas it didnt help, it
seems that something onmy machine is grabbing and
openeing the the COM3 port that my modem is grabbing and
when I try to connect, that other something is stopping
the computer from talking to my modem, even the query
modem tab says that the port is in opeation with another
system, but I cannot find out what that other something is

I will keep looking

regards
Paul
