Thanks Boba........one question .....how do I get into the BIOS. I haver
tried pressing f2 and delete (aka phoenix and award), but no joy. A flash
screen with Gateway hides the details as it boots. Any ideas, is there
another f key. John

try hitting ESC to hide the splash screen

After disabling the integrated modem and prior to installing the new one,
boot to safe mode and delete anything pertaining to either modem from the
device manager. (might be something in the COM ports section as well as
the modem section) Then reboot with the new modem and install the drivers

Hi,
I have a PIII 850 Gateway pc with an on board modem. The modem appears
to be faulty as it continues to report no dialton eventhough the line is
good and working. On diagnostics it seems to report ok. When I try to fit a
pci modem I cannot get the Intel card to work and it hangs the pc. I am lost
as to what to do. I tried to disable the modem in device manager but it
continues to be present. Can anyone suggest a course of action. I am running
Windows 98ME, and have plenty of memory ect. Sisoft sandra reports all the
hardware details. Cheers John

When the computer first starts up , go to the bios and disable the internal
modem. You should have to do this only once. Then delete it out of the
device manager and anywhere else. If you can run an uninstall for the
software , do that.

Cut off the computer and install the PCI modem. Turn the computer on. Then
install the software for that modem .

Take out the PCI modem card and goto Device Manager to delete all modem
drivers.
Reinstall the PCI modem card and install back the modem's driver.
