A FRIEND OF MINE HAS JUST UPGRADED FROM ME TO XP PRO,BUT
HAS LOST HIS MODEM
I had the same problem and it took me a while to find a
fix. Support for my old external ModemBlaster 56K was
dropped by "Creative", and the only drivers XP includes
for that brand is the internal driver. When I'd connect
the modem, XP would detect it and install the wrong
driver.
The fix is to use the Generic driver... but it gets more
complicated than that if it's "plug n play" because
Windows will insist on installing a different driver.
Here is what I did. Hopefully, this will help. (if he is
using a USB modem, he's screwed. This assumes a resonable
amount of technical expertise):
1. Disconnect modem from PC before booting Windows.
2. Boot Windows.
3. Plug modem into any COM port.
4. Windows should detect and install the non-working
driver.
5. Go into Device Manager and change the Installed driver
to "Standard 56K modem". (This prevents it from
reinstalling next time).
6. Reboot XP.

If this doesn't work, there is likely an additional step
(see Q329441) that involves deleting an incorrectly
created Registry entry.
Also, if this is an external modem, the modem MUST be ON
BEFORE booting the computer, or else Windows won't spot
it in the boot up.
A big mess, I know, but it'll save him from having to buy
a new modem.
