My modem (built into m/b) quit working and I tried to uninstall and
reinstall; it has disappeared from the device manager. I tried to install a
PCI modem board, and it will not work. Now that I try to uninstall it in
control panel, the system does a crash and reboot.

I'm over my head. Don't know if I have a soft or hardware problem.

I checked the registry with a search on the two modem names, and I have tons
of modem stuff in places I don't understand.

If I search and delete all modem references in the registry (my theory is to
do a clean start) will I totally crash my system, or am I on the right
track?

Thx, pjl

Your mother board may have failed. To display hidden devices, non-Plug and
Play devices, and devices not attached to the computer (commonly known as
"ghosted" or "phantom" devices) From a command prompt;

set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
then
start devmgmt.msc

Then, use Device Manager to remove or reconfigure these devices. Do not edit
the registry.

Dave, thx, your instructions removed the offending icon, and now I don't get
the crash and reboot. I was afraid of the m/b failure. The modem has been
putting a very loud popping noise into my phone line and disrupting my phone
service. I have now absolutely proved that, and the noise will continue
with the PC turned off, since the m/b is powered until the power plug is
removed. Took about 2 months of trouble to get to this point.

Next battle is to get the seller or mfg to do a warranty replacement.

I appreciate your help.
