I recently bought a new PC with Win XP loaded.
Installed my connection and my existing modem okay.

The problem is that Windows does not see the modem unless the modem is
powered on *before* I boot the PC.

My old PC with Win95 could see the modem no matter when I switched it on.

Can I overcome this.

TIA Geoff

Hello

Well make sure that you have the most updated modem driver
installed, or consider replacing it.

What I was told is that Windows 2000 and XP always "turns off" systems
resources to devices it can not find. Since you have an external modem, XP
will not find it if it is not powered on before boot-up. There is a way
around this:

1) Turn the modem on
2) Goto Device Manager and refresh the devices

The modem should be available.

Would that be the same as the "scan for hardware changes" option
on the tool bar when "modems" is highlighted?
