Modem Possessed

My boss uses Socket as dial-up. I selected XP only
because this is her operating system. Her computer will
start to dial-up all by itself, any time of the day or
night, time and time again. I have looked at every
possible command and cannot find out where it's programmed
to do this. IT DRIVES ME NUTS! Since this is also her
FAX line, we sit there expecting to get a FAX only to find
out we're on-line but none of us has connected. The thing
is possessed! HA HA H E L P

Since I'm on my home computer, if anyone has any ideas,
can I trouble you to type them out step-by-step so I can
print them out and try them when I get to work. She uses
hotmail and is way over her limit so seldom gets mail. I
also HATE hotmail. You get what you pay for (or don't).

The first thing to check is the Internet Explorer settings.
Right click the Internet Explorer icon then click 'properties' on the menu
(or open IE, click 'tools' then 'internet options')
Click the 'connections' tab, then uncheck the setting 'dial whenever a
network connection is not present' if it is selected.
Click 'apply' then 'ok'.
Your Oulook Express may be set to check for email at intervals, and will use
the IE settings to connect.
Your Fax software may also need to have its settings checked, as this could
also have dial-up options.
Check under options or something similar depending on what software you're
using.
If these have no effect, I'd right click on the connection icon near the
clock to check that its a legitimate ISP connection,
then run an up-to-date virus/trojan scan pronto.
