Modem not responding & Unknown Hardware

OK - two seperate issues on two seperate machines.

MACHINE 1 - eMachines 733Mhz Celeron with 128MB ram running W2K
upgraded from Win98 - clean W2K install after deleting entire 10GB
drive. I printed out a pc audit so I'd be sure and install everything
I had before...but just have a cleaner drive. Anyway, I'm having
trouble getting the modem to respond at all. It's a "Agere Systems
PCI Soft Modem" which I finally got to recognize the right driver, but
no matter what COM I use (Communications Port is 1) it doesn't respond
to a diagnose or network connection. This modem worked before I
reinstalled w2k.

Comparing the network adapters to my working w2k machine, it's missing
the "RAS Async Adapter" - however, when I look at the services, the
RAS services are up and running. The pc audit doesn't list the RAS
Async Adapter now, while before the fresh install it did list it under
Communications. I tried repairing W2K but that didn't fix it.

How do I get my modem to work again?

MACHINE 2 - after fixing the other computer's hard drive (which I temp
hooked up to this machine), my device manager lists my CD-ROM and DVD
drives under "Unknown Devices". They weren't here before - how do I
fix that...sending the command "eject" to my dvd player also ejects my
cd-rw drive...why one accepting commands that are sent to the other?

Any help is appreciated...Thanks in advance!!!

Round 1
Try removing the drivers, Removing the "modem", Reboot and make sure
there are no hidden devices, reboot again for good luck, Install
drivers, shut down , install "modem", start the PC and configure modem.

Round 2
One possibility
Cannot Access CD-ROM and "Code 31" Error Message in Device Manager After
You Remove Adaptec Easy CD Creator from Your Computer
