I'm running XP Home edition and I'm on 56k dialup. My modem won't get
detected automatically and have to do a add new hardware search. This only
happened when I turn on my external modem after the system start up. If I
turn on my modem before I start my system, then it's fine. Can somebody
help.

No, I'm connected through Com1. So, is it possible to fixed the setting like
in Win98?

Then it sounds like a driver issue. Have you checked the manufacturer's
website for updated drivers and/or issues that might be specific to your
device functioning with XP?

Yes and I have downloaded the latest driver for winxp but the problem still
remain. The modem is working fine. Just that windows treat it as not present
when it's power is not turn on when windows starts. Like you said it could
be the issue specific to my device functioning with XP. I would like to
check if anybody here having the same problem?

What do the instructions for the modem say? Do they recommend turning the
modem on before booting, maybe this is by design.

When I was on dialup, I had to do the same thing: turn the modem on before
powering up the computer. US Robotics fax/modem, serial connection. Never
did find a workaround. Eventually it became a habit to turn on modem, turn
on computer, get another cup of coffee, sit down and work.
