modem not being recognized

a friend has a computer that has windows xp professional and i was told to
uninstall the modem. and restart the computer and let the computer recognize
the modem but it does not recognize it what could be wrong

start/run. type:
devmgmt.msc

If the modem is listed as any kind of unknown device (exclamation point
icon), you can doubleclick it to show the Properties, then use the Driver tab
to click the "Update Driver" button, and let Windows search Update, and the
web for a driver.
