My modem lights have disappeared help any-one please

Not a Windows question at all; but it sounds like the modem has died.
Contact your ISP for a new one.

If you mean the modem status lights that sit in your taskbar when you are
connected to the internet, try Start > Run > lights.exe

Good one. I haven't used a real modem in so long I forgot about that!

Disconnect the modem totally from your system, and
from the telephone line. Plug it in (presumably, with
an adaptor). Does _any_ light come on? If not, take
it to your local computer store and get another. If some
light comes on, post further here, and give details.
 
I have tried all suggestions (except the format one)
none worked,even the run/lights.exe
I have ghosted back to a recent good OS and all is now well

You never said if:

You are using an external modem with a cable and power cord or is the
modem interanl with lights.
You modem still worked or not when it had no lights
If external, did it have at least a power light that worked?
Were the missing lights on the modem, power supply or in the Windows
Notification Area
Did you spot any errors in Device Manager in the area of modems or
other devices.

I never asked either, but would find it interesting.

You have to be more clear next time and say my Modem lights in the Systray have
disappeared. To turn it back next time you go to Control Panel\Modem and select
Properties in the and put a checkmark to show Modem in the Systray
