Hi Group

A bit puzzled. Win 2k server with RRAS enabled for dial in. Line 1, Modem
1, com 1. Line 2, Modem 2, com 2.

Until yesterday I had 2 phone lines with seperate phone numbers connected to
2 x 56k Courier Everything External Modems.
Each modem was connected to a seperate com port on my server. 1 on com 1
the other on com 2. It has been this way for over a year now and worked
every day.
Last night we had some very bad electrical storms and very close lightening
strikes.
Today the modem on com 2 has decided not to allow anybody to connect to the
server. It can make outgoing calls and the line appears to be perfectly ok
but when the modem is connected it answers the call as expected but instead
of the usual screeching of hand shaking it just disconnects the caller.
I assumed that the storm had caused some damage to the modem so replaced it,
the only thing I had to hand was a brand new (still in the box) internal PCI
modem which is now installed on com 3.
I have added the new modem to Ports in the RAS console but the problem is
that it is behaving just the same as the modem I removed.
The other Courier Everything on com 1 and Line 1 is working fine. If I put
the working Courier Everything on com 1 and connect it to Line 2 it still
works.

Anyone got any ideas

I've had a similar problem. Did you by chance look at the
evenvwr to see what messages you are receiving? I'm
getting the following:

Event ID: 20049
Source: Router
Type: Warning
Description: The user connected to port %Name% has been
disconnected due to an authentication timeout.
