there is an option to automatically disconnect from the Internet if you're
not
using your machine - useful for dial-up connections to avoid a big phone
bill if you forget
to disconnect. you dont say what version of Windows you use and what
connection you use
so I cant be more specific. Right click Internet Explorer and select
properties to bring up the
Internet Properties panel and browse through your connection settings -
should be in there somewhere.

It could be caused by noise on the line. Have you got any crackles or
whooshing noises or anything like that on that line?

HTH.

Does your email program have the option to check mail and then
dis-connect?

Is it a USB modem for ADSL? If not then ingore.

But there are some issues that modem manufacturers have had with some
mother board chipsets. For example, my USB modem would disconnect me
every ten mins or so, until I found out that the USB drivers on my
ASUS A8V deluxe for the VIA chipset needed updating.

Plus, see if you can get the signal to noise ratio on your line
increased, it may drop the line if the signal drop too far
