I have had several modem problems which I have resolved by
using a new modem, however when connected to the internet
via dial up connection, there is no 'computer moniter'
icon appearing in the taskbar. There is however a built in
LAN adaptor on the motherboard and this is installed but
shows as moniter icon with a cross through it on the
taskbar. Any ideas

Go to control panel - network connections. Right click on
your dialup connection and click on "properties". There is
a tick box at the bottom saying "show icon in notification
area when connected" - make sure it's ticked and click ok.
if it's already ticked, try unticking it, clicking ok,
then going back in and putting the tick back.

Also try turning off the autohide icons in the taskbar
properties by going to start-settings-taskbar and start
menu properties, and untick the "hide inactive icons"
tickbox

Thanks to M Rajesh & Farkyss !!!

I have sorted this out after much head scratching, easy
when you know how !!

for info if anyone has XP Pro, I had to
click 'start' 'connect to' and 'show all connections' I
than right clicked my connection icon,
selected 'properties' and ticked 'show icon in
notification'.

without help I received, I would have thought it a major
fault as I have never come accross this before !!
