I read somewhere recently that modem hi-jacking does not affect you if you
are on broadband, a friend of mine who seems to know everything says that
this is not the case and that you are just as vunerable or even more so if
you use broadband,
Anyone?

I presume you are referring to rogue diallers. These can only work on
dial-up ISP's, not on broadband. Broadband has its own set of problems with
regards to accessing your computer. That's why you need to have a firewall
and anti-virus program running at all times.

many thanks
Bob.

If you have a standard modem in your system and if it is connected to the
phone line, even if only to take advantage of the fax function, a dialer
could cause your system to dial out in a manner consistent with rogue
dialers. If the system's internal modem is not connected to a phone line,
then the dialer would be useless though it might trigger events on your
system as it tries to connect. You might get modem in use notices or
crashing or seemingly odd events that are not triggered by anything you
specifically do.

That being the case, if your question was meant to determine whether or not
you need to be protected against that possibility, the answer would still be
yes and running without such protect, up to date AV and Firewall leaves you
open to other things as well.
