Modem Errors high, compression low; help!

Hi all,

I've just installed XP Pro on a clean hd and (after a bit of initial
drama of having to remove 2 worms I got whilst on the way to download
FireFox) everything is now running smoothly. BUT I am having trouble
downloading things, I'm on dialup and I'm using a DLink external modem
and it's connecting okay but after a little while the "Received"
compression level drops dramatically (which I'm assuming is in response
to the level of errors I'm getting) and the error count starts to
steadily climb. It continues climbing until to get any transfer at all
I have to cut the connection and reconnect (it reaches about 70 odd
errors before this point). My first port of call was making sure I had
the right drivers installed, which I do, right firmware version and
all, direct from the DLink website so now I'm wondering whether it is a
hardware problem or not. Just a bit of background info, I WAS using
another modem that I'd been using for over a year but it had decided to
start not responding, so I switched modems and this one worked, but
it's not a brand new one so it could very well have a fault if
something is causing this.

So any thoughts on this? Is it a hardware problem or can I fix
something up on the software side? Also I know it's not my telephone
line because previously I've been running with no problems for years.

Thanks in advance!

See the answers you already got in the other newsgroup to which you

Please do not multipost. If you feel your question should be asked in
more than one newsgroup, crosspost judiciously to a few appropriate
groups. Here is an explanation of that:
