I've had my computer for years. Just yesterday I turned it on and there is a
window saying it found new hardware and needs to install a modem. I haven't
put on a new modem, nor uninstalled the old one. I cannot connect to the
internet with my computer!

So - how would my modem have disappeared? The only way I can think is
through an automatic update from Microsoft.
How do I get back connected to the internet?

In Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) you can open the Properties of the modem
device, and use the Driver tab button to "Roll Back driver"

I can't connect to the internet with that computer because it thinks there is
no modem.

If Device Manager fails to list the modem device, it's broken, or
disconnected physically in some way.

OK - thank you for your time.

Can you tell me how it would have disappeared when none of us in the house
removed it?
Theresa

You should have the system modem tested by someone who understands the
hardware.
