At home I have a main line with four extension phones and an answering
machine which picks up on four rings for a new call, two rings for
subsequent calls.
I have Windows 2000 Advanced Server configured with RRAS to answer
incoming calls on an attached modem. The modem has not yet been
connected to the line because I want to find a way to control when/how
the modem answers.
My goal is to use my cell phone as a modem to dial into my home number
and have the RRAS modem pick up. It would be really nice if either the
modem (LT WinModem on a Compaq Armada M700 laptop) could be configured
to pick up if a special string of characters were sent. I mention this
because I might use my phone to retrieve answering machine messages,
which could be on the second or fourth rings, though usually the second.
I also have a USR Sportster External 33.6 fax/modem I can use if the
built-in LT WinModem can't.
I just received a Comswitch 5500 from Command Communications to aid with
modem/voice routing, but looking through the manual, it defaults to six
rings, which defeats my answering machine. I may end up returning it,
depending on how the list responds to my query and on how their tech
support answers, too.
I'm just looking for a simple way to get my auto-answer incoming modem
to pick up on just my cell phone, provided the right digits are entered
(maybe a special RRAS policy?) so I can still use the cell phone to also
call the main number and use it for normal voice calls and retrieving
answering machine messages, and not have the modem get in the way.
Help? Ideas?
Thanks.
