mobsync.exe hangs and consumes 50% CPU

The synchronization utility mobsync.exe (used to update active desktop
items) always hangs and then consumes 50% CPU which for some reason
brings explorer down to its knees.

Any idea what could cause mobsync.exe to hang? And how to fix this?

Michael

I have exactly the same fault.
I believe that the fault developed after a problematic standby or hibernate
(which I don't often use).
I also believe that the following are more symptoms of the same fault:

rundll32.exe hangs with 50% CPU when you try to edit the list of Web
Pages on the Web tab of the Desktop Items dialog (click Customise Desktop on
the Desktop tab of the Display Properties dialog).

cleanmgr.exe hangs with 50% CPU

Here is how to reproduce another symptom:

i) Hover over the top of an Active Dekstop Item until the grey menu bar
appears
ii) Click the down-arrow on the left of the menu bar to show the popup
menu
iii) Uncheck the "Make Available Offline" menu item

This makes Explorer hang and consume 50% of the CPU.
I guess it is an underlying DLL crashing into a loop...
I am trying to using WinDbg to establish the call stack in these various
circumstances but it doesn't seem to be a trivial task (any tips would be
gratefully received)

This is a nasty one - I had almost given up hope, but all the clues were there.
The fact that the CPU stuck at 50% gives you a clue, and debugging tools
showed that there were lots of threads running.

Various things (such as changing profile) helped a bit, but the problem
seems to be cleared by logging in to the computer BIOS and disabling the
HyperThreading option. Please let me know if this does not help you.

After a reboot my computer is back to normal. I can enable HyperThreading
now without any problem, but I am not sure I trust it anymore...

I appreciate this is an old thread but it pops up on google near the top every time!
My mobsync issues and solution are as follows
I have a laptop that connects to an office network and which allows 'hot' un-docking.
Network storage is enabled - i.e. 'My Documents' is on a file server.
Mobsync ran out of control and synchronisation stopped working; no proposed solution worked.
I ran disk cleanup and notice offline files amounted to over 1GB.
I deleted them and file synchronisation started working properly and mobsync behaves itself.
