mobo sound card driver not available?

Greetings,

I recently got a Systemax machine (with win98) and installed win2k and an
Nvidia GeForce FX-5200 dual-headed video card. The video card works great,
but the motherboard sound chip is not working, and win2k doesn't recognize
the sound driver(s) as being installed or even available.

The Audio tab of the Sounds and Multimedia Properties shows "No Playback
Devices" etc. Add/Remove Hardware wizard shows a "Found Multimedia Audio
Controller", but when searching local HD, win2k installation CD and Windows
Update, then "Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device."

How do I determine what the sound chip type is so that I can locate a
driver? What else can I do, and how to diagnose this problem please?

Go to the Systemax website and find out what sound chip is in your
particular model then look for suitable Win2K drivers, if any, to download.
If Systemax cannot provide drivers then, having identified the sound chip,
search driverguide.com for Win2K drivers.

Good luck to you.

I would spend about 15 minutes on that problem, then buy a sound card.
The shop where I work sells them new with drivers for $12. Hopefully
you have a PCI slot for it. Go into BIOS and just disable the onboard
sound.

I have thrown away many a NIC, video and sound card because of unknown
drivers. The whole "find drivers, load drivers, discover drivers don't
work, start over" routine gets old REAL quick.

Good luck!

Thanks so much. I located a driver for a Creative CT5880 chip and am
downloading via slow modem now, ~23MB.
