MOBO Dilema

I attempted to start my desktop last evening only to get as far as the
processor spec. No RAM and Drive data lines thereafter. I then fitted a
spare PSU and still same. A quick check on drives C: and D: (fitted them to
an external USB case and checked them out via my notebook). revealed both OK
and I could read all data. Great at least it's not C: drive. Well not the
hardware anyway.

Ah well I thought the old KT7A has finally given up the ghost after 4 years
good service.

Off I go and buy a new all singing dancing ready assembled MOBO with AMD 64
and 1 gig ram. Before fitting the new board I checked out the eldergeek for
XP related pointers one of which was to place the XP disc into CDRom before
removing the old board. I started up comp to open the tray and the monitor
showed 1 gig RAM......strange, I then put C: drive back in and hey presto
we're up and running again.

My question is, should I take this as a hint the system may well go down
again and fit the new board or should I take the new sparkly bits back. The
upgrade may sound simple but I understand it can be a disaster.

See below about the faulty capacitor problem. You MB might not be in
the time window where these were being used by almost every vendor -
almost 4 years at the outside.

I think the KT7A has become a classic at this point. Why give it up if it
works? As long as you have a good back up plan you'll be able to let the
world know about that old athlon that keeps goin' strong.
You're one of the chosen ones. Run it as long as it boots and be proud.
Don't let temptation get in you're way. Hang in there and avoid that
"disaster" just waiting to happen.
