Hi all

I have put together a pc from spare parts I got the mobo that someone threw
out so I collected it but the boot up is reverting back to factory defaults
and the clock changes back to a past time in win xp so I think it is the
mobo battery, I tried leaving the pc on for 12 hours hoping the battery
wouold get recharged but has not seemed to. If the mobo battery is dead of
electricity do I have to replace it or can it be recharged?

Also what is it when the message "Check sum error" comes up during boot up?

Thanks
GK

Replace battery; it's just like watch batteries, disposable. With your
setup, you should never have to replace it again. BUT, the mobo will not
hold its proper settings w/o it, plus it won't keep time (which is also
important for proper comp. performance). Set up mobo acc. to user's manual
found thru Google. "Check sum error" should disappear--that tells you, *in
a sense*, that the sum of certain numbers obtained from the setting of
certain parameters equals a not-accepted one from a series of pre-determined
values needed for proper performance. Altho' not technically accurate,
that's really all we need to assume about that term for Computer-Assembly
101;). s

If you leave a motherboard sitting in your closet, with the CMOS battery
still in the socket, the battery will last for 3 years before being
drained. It is not rechargeable (it would explode if you did). Replacement
batteries are readily available.

When a computer is left plugged in, with the power switch on the back of
the computer in the "ON" position at all times, then the CMOS battery
will last for 10 years. If you turn off the computer, by switching it
off at the back every night, or via a switch on your power strip, then
the battery life will be less than 10 years. (10 years is the assumed
shelf life of the battery.)

But if storing computers, you should see the battery drained after about
3 years or so. I've had to replace the battery here, on two of my
stored computers, and it was a bit over the 3 year mark.
