Batteries are generally available anywhere batteries are
sold. One way of telling when it's time to replace the
battery is by removing the old one and discarding it.

Hi Chris -

As mentioned in your other thread (no need to start two) - most any
computer/electronics store (and many other retailers) stock motherboard
batteries.

You either need a Voltmeter to test it's current voltage (most motherboard
batteries are rated at about 3.3 volts) or you can take it to a
computer/electronics store and have it tested. I'm not familiar with
retailers in the U.K., but any consumer electronics store (such as Radio
Shack in the U.S.) should be able to test the battery for you for free.

You will know the battery needs replacing when the time on your computer
starts going wacko, that's usually the first sign.

Most mobo of recent mfg'r use a pop-in coin cell battery, a
common size is the 2032 but there are other sizes.
Batteries usually 3-5 years. You can buy a battery at
Wal-Mart or other store for $2.
If you don't know what battery you need, download the mobo
manual for your system ad it will tell you what, how and
where the battery is located. If you don't really know who
made your mobo, get
http://www.lavalys.com/index.php?page=view&article=4&selcat=SO
to scan your system and report the make and model. You then
will need to find the makers website by looking at the
direct link on the "motherboard" folder.
