I was just getting a very old PC up and running with XP for one of the
younger kids in the family. It uses a MN-730 Wireless PCI adapter. It
connects inconsistently, and I can't quite figure out why.
If I do a shut-down/restart, the network adapter sees the network, but will
not connect when it restarts. If I physically shut down, and then do a
restart by pressing the power button on the computer, things seem to run
normally.
If I run the network instllation program it gets the card up and running too.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Check the wireless router for the logs. You might see an entry where
it "lists out" an entry which might contain "deauthentication..."
This might mean that your anti-virus / firewall software might need to
"trust" the wireless network name (aka SSID.)
