Occasionally, when TV on Demand (the pause live tv feature) is enabled,
after half and our or so, the computer running XP Pro locks up tight (screen
goes dark, all video signal to the monitor is lost (it goes into power
saving mode)) and has to be reset.

The files are being stored on a NTFS drive in DVD quality. Anybody else
seen this happen?

No not me. However I have found that merely "upgrading" has failed -
I have upgraded twice so far. Each time something is wrong.

I installed from the CD then found they had the new 8.8 MMC out. So I
upgraded it. It did not install properly - in Hardware/Device Manager
I had "x" in the Audio portion. The TV would not start.

Last time was a few weeks ago with MMC 8.9. I went to upgrade "just"
the MMC and as soon as I went into the TV SETUP - changed a tab or
two, I got a GPF error. (ATI is the ONLY app that causes GPFs for me
now - I am running XP Pro SP1a). Oddly during the upgrade the "TV"
was the first on the Launchpad....

In both cases - I have complete uninstalled EVERY SINGLE ATI APP. And
then REINSTALLED everything. The only downside was the the Gemstar
"favorite stations" (not sure how to export it once you have it
setup).

Otherwise I have found once everything is put back, it all works.
Then once it does work.. DVD is back on top of the LaunchPad... odd.

Now my problem is - I have an 9600AIW - and the FM tuner is all of a
sudden crapping out after a minute-many minutes. Garbage sound. Stop
it start it - fine.

I had the same problem. Went to SmartGART and had it retest all settings.
I ran it from the .exe in the ATI directory rather than from the display
properties tab. There is a shortcut in the ATI Control Panel subdirectory.
Shows more options. After that all ran OK. HTH

Are you referring to the CRASHES of Demand or the FM tuner problem?
I tried the smartgart and it didn't do anything.
I am using the shortcut provided..

"C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\main\ATIMMC.exe" /FM

In my case, I'm talking about TV-on-demand. I have 9800Pro AIW which does
not have any FM receiver.

TV-on-demand is unusable on my system with the latest driver and MMC. It
crashes the system at seemingly random # of minutes after pausing the live
TV.
