I believe Microsoft Management Console is running
defrag.exe on it's own. I see the file in the console but
can not remove it or even determine if it's really doing
what I suspect. The problem: I use Norton GoBack and it
keeps reporting "logging discontinued because of massive
file activity". When that happens, I can always find a
link to C:\Windows\System32\defrag.exe. Can someone tell
me how to see what happens from that file?

Hmm - there's probably something from www.sysinternals.com that would let
you see.

There are defrag like processes that happen in idle time without user
intervention.

For an example, see "Optimizing Disk Layout" in this word doc:

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...st System Startup for PCs Running Windows.doc

This is an automatic process which replaces the standalone bootvis tool.

There are registry keys mentioned in this doc which will give you an
indication of date and time of the last operation, I think.

Defrag can be run from a command prompt, and can also be run with no UI by
other processes on the machine.

The good news is that I can't picture why malware or spyware would want to
run defrag on your system, unless it is trying to be a good citizen and tune
the PC for maximum effectiveness as a trojanned host (unlikely, I hope!)
So, this is most likely a normal system process, like the one I referenced.

I managed to remove defrag.exe from MMC but this did not
solve the problem. Defrag still seems to run without my
assistance. I have now returned MMC to it's original
state but have no idea how to proceed.
