Follow the Download the DirectX 9.0b package now link, Steve, that'll take
you to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-E177-4A0E-91D0-B4310675B02B&displaylang=en
where you _can_ download the link. You didn't really expect M$ to be
straightforward abou this, did you?

patrickp
Thanks patrickp, I have downloaded the patch and applied it. Your'e right, I
dont expect M$ to make it easy. Admitting they have cocked up never comes
easy to Billy boy.

Unfortunately it does not appear to solve the problem.
I re-tuned all the channels and it still is showing me a grainy version of
ITV on all channels.

Steve

I have just set up Windows XPPro and installed the latest Catalyst drivers
(3.1 suite) and MMC 8.7.

I have set up the TV and tuned in approx 30 channels from my cable feed but
all the channels are showing the same grainy picture. When I retuned the
channels and wathed the process, I could see it tuning in successfully to
different stations but when I select them, they are al the same again.

Any ideas what is wrong?

Steve, my psychic powers are telling me... I see a big DX sign... oh, you've
installed DirectX 9.0b, haven't you? I notice your post comes from a
BlueYonder feed, so you're in the UK - DX9.0b breaks PAL/SECAM tuners. M$
have finally posted a fix at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825116, but are
still not warning people on the DX9.0b download page, and the fix is hard to
find.

Thanks, I followed the link and M$ don't provide the link to download the
fix, does anyone know if this means they are after more money to fix
something that they have broken.

Wasn't this posted in Windows Updates? Maybe it wasn't this one, but
I do recall seeing a DX9 update about a month ago or so.

What kind of cable to you have connected to your card? If it's an RG-59,
try upgrading to an RG-6. I know this might not make sense if it had been
working properly before, but it's probably worh a try.

Well if its showing ITV on all channels I would think that a click on the
input connector button is needed, to change it from S-Video or Composite to
Tuner.
No?

if you hook that cable your using to a TV is the picture clear? Have you jacked the cable end that goes into the connector of the
vid card, can get frustrating back there if you have not a lot of room to maneuver....drivers aren't going to clear up a grainy
picture

You are right, the MS Fix does not work. I have found an older solution for
the problem:

Don't forget it, fix it. Replacing kstvtune.ax with an older version

Thanks, that did the trick. i am back in business.

Steve

so it was an tactual driver file that caused fuzzy picture... I stand corrected...wonder what that file actually controls....sounds
like freq..

It wasn't just the fuzzy picture that was the problem.
Despite tuning in 30 seperate channels successfully, once completed, the
same off tune channel replaced all of them.

The fact that it appears to be well known and admitted by M$ that there is a
problem with Directx9.0b and the TV tuners of most cards does not seem to
detract from M$ reluctance to make life easy with a freely available patch.
I had to ask people who already had gone through this exactly which link the
fix was available on.
Unfortunately this did not work for me but thanks to some lateral thinking
on the part of another contact, I replaced the offending file (kstvtune.ax)
with one from DirectX9.0a and cured the problem. I am no programmer but I
would be willing to bet that this file is not a PAL version and therefore
will tune to a different set of frequencies than the PAL one, hence the off
tune state.

Funny thing is that I have Directx9.0b on my WinMe partition and this does
not cause the same problem. I suppose this is WinXP specific.

Anyway, thanks to all that chipped in with help. Ain't the Internet
wonderful, I had the problem licked within 24 hours.

Steve

hmmm I think your probably close to the problem with that file, since the tuner behaved like a 'dirty tuner' where you have to get
out the butter knife and whack the knob a few times......too bad there is no tuner knob to bludgeon,, although I bet threes a few
cases with dents in the top LOL

I have a similar problem as you. AFTER installing the (then) latest catalyst
drivers (wxp-w2k-catalyst-7-94-030917m-011434c.exe) and MMC8.7 my TV picture
remains a blackscreen. Sound comes out fine and I see when I change channels
very briefle the picture but then things become black. I managed to get the
proper picture onscreen when I pressed the teletext button but whenever I
switched channels again (or anything else) the picture became black again.

This is a problem with the videodriver NOT MMC nor DX9. I reinstalled my
older driver (wxp-w2k-catalyst-7-93-030812a1-010735c-efg.exe) and thinsg are
fine now.

I use an OEM Radeon 9800SE AIW

i have the same problem, but
i can tune ulead studio v5.0 and virtual dub to a steady picture and record,
lot of work searching the right frequencies manually, but it does the job
and now i'm goiing for a search to the driver you mentioned
in any case thx
Nick

If you want I can email them although they are a bit large (+22MB) for most
mailboxes.
Perhaps ATI still has some older drivers on their site (I presume so)

Have you also tried ASUS' PVCR? The latter versions also work with ATI
cards. PVCR is definitly more convenient to setup TV channels than the
programs you mentioned.

Regards,

Manu T

hi Manu,

I will try asus pvcr,w ehn i've found it, maybe that's a good alternative
thx any way
or I must wipe my disk and reinstall from bottom, but :( I've too much on it
regards,
Nick

hi Manu and ng,
well I've downloaded and installed ASUSdvcr2.zip from the asus site and use
an old 7.94-030917m-011434C-ATI which I've been installed first
and it works well, only not as sharp pictures as the ati-tvtuner and not as
sharp recording as the ATI
but...........
I now know the problem with the ati tuner, in my case anyway
MMC is not able to hold the frequencies of the found channels.
in formerly MMC's that was no problem, but if you install an earlier version
of mmc it warns to install the newest driver and ther we go again... not any
progress
so I've bought the MMC 8.1 cd for nothing ! :(

nice programming =>guys from ATI from which I''ve HEARD NOTHING ! !!!
after my email,
I know you read with me, so response and act

in my case it's PAL and The Netherlands on Cable.
the range is 1 to 366 channels with ASUS, ATI goes to 125
I only have 44 active channels, except for one which was not found
the frequency ranges from 2614416 till 843787500, in my case and region
just about the same which were found by vitual dub and ulead studio v5.0
when I took the founded frequency from virtual dub and replaced it with this
value for the frequency found by asus the display was much better. so there
is a finetuning problem, in which ati is better

I hope anyone can make it work now
responses and further suggestions are welcome

Nick
