Guess Who

MMC 8.6 is out, as well as a new DVD decoder. Haven't installed yet, will
wait for my next reinstall of XP which may be this weekend.

Anyone install and use it yet? Opinions?

Yes.

Okay except the TV in MMC 8.6 defaults to mono sound every time it's
started.

Just how often do you reinstall XP? And why?

I reinstall about every 2 or 3 months. I like to start with a clean system
every now and then to get rid of all the junk, plus I keep all the new
driver and software updates to install on a fresh OS. I first try them out
before wiping my OS, to make sure they work properly.

I guess it's a combination of my anal-retentiveness, and not having a life!

8.6 is still broke. At least for me anyway.

Problem?...

Guide Plus will update it's channel listing just fine by itself but when I
start Eazylook, Eazylook complains that I need to use my TV Listings
application to update my my channels because it's out of date. Does it
every time, even right after Guide Plus is updated.

Anybody else have this problem?

ATI DVD Player also keeps locking up unless delete an aspi32.dll file (which
I need for my burner). I don't understand this because PowerDVD works fine
on this same system and the ATI DVD Player is supposed to be based on it
AFAIK.

I had the guide plus problem also un installed reinstalled and it worked (if you want to call it that) [custom install -uncheck
etc] The DVD thing,,, did you have the upgrade 8.1 CD blah blah so you could update the DVD? I use PDVD5 and forget the damn 15$
ATI wants... I don't have any problems with NERO and any aspi stuff. I still have problems with Standby and waking up properly..I
have to verify which piece of hardware is causing that, I haven't nailed it down to the video.

no i am not USA ntsc...
i have the options to change from, mono, stereo, sap but if stereo is available thats the default for me.

Well Guide+ works as far as I can tell. It updates fine. The problem is
that Eazylook insists that I need to update my TV listings even though I did
so the listings in Eazylook do not work and I get the lame error message
every time I run Eazylook.

I did have the 8.1 CD but that did not solve anything unfortunately. ATI
DVD player would lock up unless I deleted or renamed my aspi32.dll file.
Once that is done it will at least start but still locks up.

Tried everything except a fresh OS install but that is just too much work.
Maybe someday.

Quite possibly.

It takes me quite a while to get a system where I like it - it's not
something I enjoy doing. I had Win2K installed from October (when I
replaced my defective hard drive) until last month (when I replaced most of
the machine) and had no problems.

Usually good housekeeping practice is all thats required to keep a system
rid of "junk"..

XP Pro has given me something I thought I'd never see. The ability to
run stable and 'clean' for a year and a half without an opsys reinstall.
Even with a number of hardware changes like vid cards, secondary hd's,
dvd player, cdrw. XP has been very good for me. I like not having to
reinstall the opsys every few months :)

Me too. almost 18 months and not a single reinstall. I've been through
3 motherboards, two disk drives (moved the system with Drive Image), 4
video cards, two sound cards without a reinstall in 18 months. A ton of
software installs, upgrades and removals.

XP is by far the best OS that MS has ever offered.
