Whenever I try and save a movie using "other settings" on
the computer section, the program closes and I cannot
save into any other format than wmv - I need to save in a
different format to make a DVD with Sonic My DVD. Any
ideas? Thanks.

Hi there,

Movie Maker 2 can only create two types of video file and one audio file. These
are...
Video
====
1) WMV a fairly highly compressed file with little loss of quality provided the
maximum data rate for both audio and video are used.
2) AVI a file that uses no compression as such provided that image size and
video and audio data rate are preserved.

Audio
=====
1) WMA, a compressed audio channel with little loss of quality.

If the format you want to save to is not one of the above, you should in any
case save the file as DV-AVI (the only AVI option in Movie Maker 2) Having
saved your file in this format you will be able to convert it with any other
software you have and guarantee that you are presenting your other software
with the best possible source file and thereby ensuring the best results after
the conversion.

I was always under the impression that Sonic MyDVD was capable of accepting
either of these formats.

Windows Media Encoder
==================

Windows Media Encoder is a free set of tools from Microsoft. Using the
"Encoder" program you can import either a WMV or AVI file from Windows Movie
Maker 2 and render it down to the quality-size etc that you want. You can also
use it to convert your file into an ASF file. ASF files were the forerunner and
still used a lot today as streaming media over the Internet. Some of the video
files on my site are in the ASF format.

Your Problem
==========

It is possible that the codecs used for creating WMV files on your system are
in some way defunct. There are a number of ways that it can occur...the
solution is the same though.

You should install Windows Media Encoder mentioned above, or if you want to
download a smaller file you can get just the codecs from Microsoft's web site.

If the issue occurs because you have used Windows Media Encoder to create a non
standard profile I suggest you delete it and start again.
