MM2 doesn't work for us

Given the number of problems reported in this community
newsgroup, I'm a bit irritated that I downloaded and
updated to the "new" version of MovieMaker.

The older version permitted me to do at least basic
editing and to output the film to an AVI file for burning
to DVD.

Here's what we've seen today.

After spending six hours as a family attempting to get a
home video into the WindowsXP Media Center box and edit
it to DVD, we have had MovieMaker crash at every attempt
to run it in the last four hours.

I genuinely believe that the code is defective. I do not
have DIVX installed, updated our box's anti-viral library
and scanned the application and directories, yet I find
that the application (even after shutting down) is
consuming 40+ Megs of system RAM. Using the three finger
salute, I accessed the processes tab and found that
although the Movie Maker application was no longer
running, the RAM was allocating increasing amounts of
space to Movie Maker.

When we ran MovieMaker, we ended up seeing the
application work for a few seconds, freeze upon play back
of the initial selection, and then fail.

There is a major problem with this application and I wish
I never used it. I would have been better off just using
the 1.0 version.

MSFT needs to fix the problems with this application.

It sounds as if you have a buggy installation of MM2. I can assure you that
there are literally thousands (probably tens of thousands) who use MM2 with
no issues. Just because in your singular instance it does not work does not
make the code buggy. You would get more help if you simply stated your
problem and asked for ideas without the attitude and finger pointing.

Perhaps you can enlighten us and post the "laundry list" of "bugs, errors,
hangs and crashes". I, along with many thousands of others, have no issues
at all with MM2, and many that have had problems have used this forum
constructively and solved their problems. You, on the other hand, seem bent
on a perverse need to have someone to blame, and are evidently too lazy to
try to fix whatever issues you are having. You blame Microsoft, the maker
of your computer, and apparently refuse to even attempt to determine what
is wrong in your instance. You are a whiner, a loser, and I hope you do rip
the guts out of your computer. You accuse Msrs Ballmer and Gates of having
lost their grasp on reality. I contend you have lost your grip on reality.
MM2 performs flawlessly on many thousands (probably 10's of thousands) of
machines. At least those of us that do use MM2 have taken the time and
trouble to work through the issues instead of demanding MS to fix it.

Yes, some people have issues when trying to use MM2. The newsgroup tends to
have a negative flavor because that's the place that people who need help
resolving those issues go for peer support. Lots of negative posts may
simply mean that lots of people are using MM2, not necessarily that a higher
percentage of users have problems.

Because only 1 of 10,000 people who have MM2 post on this newsgroup, I
sometimes try to determine how the other 9,999 people who don't post are
doing. Mostly I find that they don't post because they don't have problems.

One of my sons bought a new computer last week - a generic $700 HP. It came
with MM2 pre-installed and he had never used it. The first thing he did was
to capture 2 hours of raw footage of a wedding from his camcorder. Then he
made four 15 minute videos from it - in DV-AVI format. Then he burned his
first DVDs using the files as input. Then he tried the DVDs in a stand-alone
player to confirm they worked fine. Then he mailed the DVDs to the
bride/groom. He told me that he never thought that making movies could be
that easy. He's never posted a message to this newsgroup, and probably never
will - he called a couple times during his efforts for a couple tips.

That's the other side of the coin. I realize that it doesn't make your
situation any easier or resolve it. But, to the many readers of the posts,
it's sometimes good for them to see both sides.

Get real - just read the newsgroup.
I, along with many thousands of others,
have no issues at all with MM2, and many that have had problems have
used this forum constructively and solved their problems.

Look, the guy paid good money for a Windows Media Centre - if MM2 runs on
anything, it should run on a system that Microsoft explicitly markets for
this functionality.

I think he's got some entitlement to gripe about the fact that the system
doesn't work as advertised.
You are a whiner, a loser, and I hope you do rip the guts out of your

10's of thousands out of 10's of millions sold?
At least those of us that do use MM2 have taken the time
and trouble to work through the issues instead of demanding MS to fix
it.

If you build your own system, it's not unreasonable that you might have to
tweak stuff to get everything to work together. If you pay HP for a system
that they developed in partneship with Microsoft for the specific purpose
of "Media" functionality, you shouldn't have to take time or trouble to fix
it.
