MM DV-AVI playback stuttering issue in Windows Media Player

Hi

I have a large MSWMM file that I want to write to a DVD. I have video clips,
still pictures, imported music and titles and credits. When I play it in the
preview it scrolls through fine playing the music and titles perfectly.

My issue comes when I save it as a DV-AVI format under the "Save to my
computer" option. Once I have done this I verify the success by playing it in
Windows Media Player, however it does not work, the pictures seem to freeze,
scrolling through very slowly. The imported music seems to be jagged
splatterings of noise. I have cut my movie doen from 1.5 hours to 0.25 hours
but have the same issue. I also cannot play the AVI file in real player, the
issue is the same.

This leads me to believe there is an issue either with the way I am saving
it, or with the underlayed sound on the movie. As a test I removed the music
and saved a small version of the file, however the film still stuttered -
timing it I could see that every second the film moved forward in the Media
Player actually took 5 seconds of real time, and when it got to the audio of
the video clop the same disjointed stuttering occurred, although this is
probably due to the elingated time rather than the audio itself.

I am testing it in Media Player before burning it to a DVD as the Cucusoft
software for converting avi to dvd tells me if I cannot play it in Media
Player it will not work. Not believing them I tested this theory and they are
correct!

So has anyone seen this before, or has anyone any ideas - whether saving as
a WMV and then converting this using some other tool or just anything to help
it would be really appreciated.

Steve.

While the file was saving, did you walk away from the PC and let it finish
on its own. Encoding video really needs the exclusive use of the processor
and memory and if you are experiencing problems, the best thing to do is
temporarily disable any applications you don't need for encoding (yes,
including antivirus, but remember to re-enable it afterwards)... close out
Outlook/Outlook Express, don't surf, play solitaire or other games, stop
using your word processor or other graphics applications, and go and do
something useful that doesn't involve the PC.... laundry, dish washing,
vacuuming, cooking etc etc. Leave it alone until it's finished.

And don't forget to defrag the drive and run a Disk Cleanup BEFORE saving.

Hi Cari

It took 14 hours to save as an AVI, so of course I surfed and did other
stuff!!!

I will take on board all of your points and let you know how I get on. The
pointers are really appreciated thank you for the time you have given it is
really appreciated.

Steve
