MM doesn't accept *.mp4 Videos- although codec is installed. WMP plays the
videos, WME accepts them - only MM does't take it - it doesn't even try (you
have to select "all files" in the import dialog, otherwise the mp4-files
aren't even shown and then it just says "wrong file type")

unbelievable! there are more and more flshcard camcorders, which use the mp4
file format!

Q: when will MS fix that?

Can you send me a small sample of the video together with the codec. I
wam interested to find out a way to resolve such issues.

Hello,

It has been a problem with Movie Maker from the very start. Their is
little likely hood thatr the issue will be fixed in the immediate future.
Your solution is moderatly easy. Take a trip to www.videohelp.com/convert
and check out the discussion papers and free software for converting to a
WMV or maybe an AVI file. videohelp.com is just about the best source on the
web for solving your type of problem

Be aware though that you have almost certainly been invited to break the
copyright laws by sending a Codec to the person calling himself
rehan......Very Risky....you might want to report him to the company
creating your software.....sounds to me that they may be interested in
hearing about such a blatant infringement of the copyright laws....

*** As i wrote, WMEncoder accepts the files, so I could that. But I won't,
cause it's a hell of a work AND an additional quality loss.

I'm not a programmer, but this MM bugfix shoud be very easy for MS! Mabe
someone should tell them, that the number of mp4-flashcard-camcorders is
increasing every day...

But thanks anyway

Hello,

Yes I agree with you 100%. One of the reasons for not having Quicktime
as a properly recognised option within Windows is due to the quicktime
people (I am informed) not wanting to give away all of their hard work.
Their have been court room battles between the two in the past. The present
state of affairs is largely due to that... For myself, if I had wqorked hard
on what a lot of people consider to be a superior product I would not be
very keen on allowing some other company the rights to do with it as they
wished.....thats not on.

Since WME and WMP are able to work with the file, I suspect the only
thing restricting Movie Maker to accept the file may be some early check
for the extesnion (.mp4). This is a long shot but you may be able to
coerce WMM to accept the file by just changing the file extesnion such
as from 'movie.mp4' to 'movie.mp4.avi'.

This trick seems to work with most Real and Quicktime movies too, (after
one installs a Direct Show codec for these formats rather than the
official one. Search for "Real Alternative" and QuickTime Alternative").

Let us know how it goes.

Regards

*** thanks, I had the same idea ( I changed to "movie.avi"). I tried your
version too, MM tries to open it, but then says: file is invalid or damaged
(probably because it takes it as an avi file)

thx!

thx again, but I would need a Program to edit AND convert the mp4-videos in
an effective file format (divx, wmv...)

Well, as I indicated earlier, you would not need a conversion program if it
could be got around that easy.

No, 1st convert to AVI (as per the info in the link) and then use Movie
Maker.....OR if you want to do it all in one use Nero 6 to edit all types of
MPEG video files and create DVD from them with NO loss of quality.

Nero is at www.nero.com it comes as a 30 day trial which wwill not permit
the creation of a DVD but may let you import MPEG4 and export as DV-AVI (I
am not certain about whether it will let you do that until its paid for)

Nero is a very highly regarded program and was considered that way before it
entered the video market...it has some very nice features...I use it for all
of my MPeg files nowadays...

I am NOT an Instant Expert, and thats the truth !

No, not silly at all. I was attempting to show that the situation exists for
other formats too...and although Ican not refer you to anything at the
moment, I am now told that there was a similar problem with the people who
control MPeg...don't know if thats true.

Basically microsoft have tried to apply more control over other peoples
software than those people have been prepared to accept....the end result is
Microsft's push into the TV market on their own using what one person once
called a special type of ASF file.....the WMV format LOL

I haveonce or twicew wondered why MPeg files are a problem in Movie
Maker...rather than it being an accident or poor design I would not be
surprised if it were deliberate. I guess we will always wonder and never
know for sure.

You don't need to be an Instant Expert to use NERO...

Mpegs have long been a problem in editing apps. Adobe premiere didn't accept
them, well not unless you spent another few hundred pounds on a plug in. I
don't know about the other more expensive apps, but the likes of Pinnacle
and Ulead have started the mainstream mpeg editing, and only recently.

thx again. It seems to be written in the law that people have to burn their
videos on discs ;-)

No, I haven't got a TV nor a DVD player. I'm watchin my videos on the
computer. Now I need a tool to edit AND convert my mp4-files into a
memory-saving file format like DIVX or WMV (mp4 needs aprx. the double space
of divx in the same Quality)

Nero is (like the program that was delivered with the camcorder) for
disc-freaks...

and exactly how does that answer the question posed by the OP

As far as YOUR remarks go, LOLOLOL What are you talking about...you are
telling ME that MPegs are a problem LOLOLOLOLOLOLO For Gods sake, whats up,
felt left out, or perhaps you wanted to generate this type of reply.....You
know what I said about shutting up

Thanks... I don't have a sample video clip to test conversion options... if
you see fit to email a 10 second snippet, one taken directly by the
camcorder, I can check it out... papajohn......at.....chartermi.net
