Can I write a sentence in an Excel cell which contains both text and a
formula eg "The total therefore is SUM(A1:A5)"

Or you can leave the cell containing only the formula =SUM(A1:A5) and put
the text in the cell's formatting. Select custom format and enter "The total
is therefore" general, where general can be replaced with any of the
formatting options like 0 or 0.00, etc. The advantage of this method is that
the cell is still a numeric value instead of a text value and can be used in
subsequent calculations.
