WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO HAVE AN NT 4.0 PRIMARY CONTROLLER
AND HAVE THE WIN 2K SERVER AS A MEMBER AND STILL HAVE THE
NT LOGGING IN ALL USERS AND HAVE THE W2K AS A SERVER THAT
ONLY ALLOWS A FEW USERS TO ACCESS IT AND THE FILES ON IT?
SHOULD I MAKE THE W2K A FILE SERVER ONLY OR LOAD THE
ACTIOVE DIRECTORY AND RUN IT AS A FULL SERVER? YES, I MUST
HAVE TWO OS AT THIS TIME...IN THE FUTURE, I WILL MIGRATE
THE NT SERVER TO W2K.

You can setup the new Win2k server with Active Directory, Migrate all
existing users, groups and computers to the Active Directory, and then make
the old NT4.0 Server as a BDC of the Active Directory Domain, you will then
run Active Directory in mixed mode.

I am doing something similar at my site. We have an NT
domain PDC, BDC already setup. Now im adding a W2k box for
a file server. I am just going to leave my W2k box a
member server, nothing special. From there I will setup
permission of the file/folders that can be accesed. If you
do this, your W2k box will not authenticate your users,
that will be left to the NT servers. As long as you dont
install active directory on that box, you should be fine.
If you do install active directory sometime in the future
you should look into Microsoft's Active directory
migration tool (ADTM). This will assit you in migrating
your users/group into W2k user/groups.

Chriss,

Howdy! A quick question for you: how can you turn the WINNT 4.0 Server into
the BDC of the newly created WIN2000 AD Domain without wiping and loading
it? The only thing that I can think of would be if you upgrade the WINNT
4.0 PDC to WIN2000 ( naturally, it would be a DC ) and then add the new
server to the domain as an additional DC. After a bit of time has passed
you could then dcpromo the upgraded WINNT 4.0 DC, remove it from the AD via
Metacleanup ( if necessary ) and then wipe and load it so that there is a
clean, 'true' WIN2000 DC. However, none of this entails any WINNT 4.0 DC
( neither PDC nor BDC ). I am probably missing something very simply as I
had a long weekend working on a migration.

Also, and sorry for the semantics, but there is no more PDC / BDC in WIN2000
( and I know that you know this... ). ;-)

Hello Cary :)
this post may be bad formatted by me sorry, you have to take the old domain
down at the NT4.0 Server, then join it to the new AD domain and make it as a
Domain Controller. Any how to get integrated security and a domain based
network, both servers should belong to one single domain, and if you make
the domain with AD you get some new features and a better network, he is
also ready for a migration/upgrade of his existing NT4.0 Server simply

Sorry my mistake :) take care
