Dear All,

I am trying to add an additional domain controler(WIndows
2000 With SP4) for an existing windows NT 4.0 Domain.
when i tried to install an active directory it is giving
me an error that the domain in not an active directory
(True),but my question is, can we add an windows 2000
server as an backup domain controler in windows NT4.0
domian environment?

Any Help appriciated.

Cheers

No, you can not. You have to upgrade your domain to w2k or w2k3 to use Windows 2000 servers as domain controllers. (In active directory all DC's are peers, no PDC, no BDC)

Andy,

This is not the way to do it.

First of all, there can be no WIN2000 Domain Controllers
in a WINNT 4 domain. You can indeed have WIN2000 member
servers ( like a file server or a print server ) in a
WINNT 4 domain without issue.

Secondly, and this is just a semantics thing - in WIN2000
there are no more Primary Domain Controllers or Backup
Domain Controllers. Those are specifically WINNT terms.
In WIN2000 all Domain Controllers are on equal footing.
There might be a bit of confusion in that you might have
seen the FSMO Role of PDC Emulator. The key word in that
term is "Emulator". In a WIN2000 Mixed Mode AD Domain
you can indeed have WINNT 4 BDCs. Since this is an AD
Domain, there is no true WINNT 4 PDC. This could cause a
problem, right? So, for backward compatibility we have a
WIN2000 AD Domain Controller that acts like a WINNT 4 PDC
as far as any WINNT 4 BDCs are concerned.

Try doing this: go to http://support.microsoft.com and do
a search for "Upgrading WINNT to WIN2000". There should
be several Knowledge Base articles describing the proper
procedure for this. If you can not find them then post
back and I will direct you to them.

HTH,

Cary
