Missing Windows Sound File

Hey,

I am writting on behalf of my friend, they said that they were having a
problem with something, and they thought they would be smart and delete any
old files, so now they have no sound because they deleted a Windows sound
file, is there a way of re-downloading or getting it back? And am I able to
get a list of sound files that Windows uses so I can find out which one is
missing?

OK, and then what ? Re-install XP ??

What Sound is lost ?

1) System sounds (bleeps, alerts, closing down or anything like
that), or

2) you have no sound full stop (drivers etc) ?

1) If its bleeps etc, first check in c:\windows\media and see whats in
there. There are a whole host of system files there. If there are files
there : Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > click on the
Sounds Tab and you can associate various files with the various actions.

However, if there are no sound files to associate, you can extract them from
your Windows CD - Start > Run > type in msconfig > Enter > Expand File > and
follow the instructions, you'll need to browse the XP CD and tell XP where
to put the expanded files.

2) If its a question of sound drivers re-install them from the CD that
came with the sound card or go to the manufacturer's website and down load
the most recent XP specific drivers. And yes, here you'll probably have to
re-boot !
